Votes: Ward 6 election re-run

2011-10-06 00:00

THE Msunduzi Municipality has decided to re-run the Ward six ward committee members elections after the losers complained that the elections had been rigged. The elections were held on August 20 and will be re-run this coming weekend.

The election fraud allegations follow similar complaints made in Ward five. A few weeks ago, community members from Ward five blockaded Bulwer Road with rocks and burning tyres for almost nine hours protesting the elections which they said were rigged.

Thanduyise Duma, who was among the candidates that lost, said they believed the elections had been rigged because of the number of discrepancies that they noticed during the voting process. He said they discovered that the ballot papers were numbered, which made it easier to manipulate the voting process. Some names on the ballot paper had no surnames and in other cases the surnames were placed next to the wrong candidates’ names.

Msunduzi’s Blessing Dlamini said the elections had not been rigged but there were discrepancies with the ballot paper.

“There was a mistake with one of the names which ... is why we have decided that the election should be re-run.”
