Vryheid murder: sentence delay

2012-10-15 00:00

SENTENCING of Vryheid businessman Johan Els (52) and his employee, Mduduzi Mkhize (26), in relation to the 2005 murder of Mbhekiseni Nyathi and attempted murder of Sifiso Linda, has been postponed until February 8 next year.

Judge Fikile Mokgohloa granted the postponement at the request of the defence, to enable a social worker to investigate whether or not the family of the two victims in the case would be prepared to accept payment of compensation as part of the sentence.

Advocate Christo van Schalkwyk SC submitted that the court should consider imposing correctional supervision coupled with a compensation order on Johan Els, who was found guilty of being an accessory after the murder of Nyathi, who was stabbed to death with a hunting knife by Mkhize.

Two other men, Andre Els and Christoffel Diedericks, are also still awaiting sentence for their role in kidnapping Sifiso Linda.
