Vryheid’s Volkers score an impressive19 matric As

2010-01-09 00:00

PASSING matric well is a milestone for any matriculant. But not many families can boast of 19 As produced in the same year by a single household, but the Volker family did just that after their 18-year-old triplets’ exceptional performance.

Vryheid High School principal, Paul Noomé, where the boys have been for the last five years, said the news came as no surprise since the triplets have maintained top 10 positions since grade 8.

“It is not common for siblings to all do well in all aspects of their schooling career, but that has been the story of these youngsters since grade 8. They have excelled in sport, leadership and academics. They really have excelled in all respects said Noomé.

The middle triplet, Thomas, who was the school headboy, was one of two boys at the school who achieved seven distinctions. His brothers Raymond and Sebastian both received six As.

Overall, Noomé said they were excited by the results. Out of a matric class of 149 pupils, only one failed, which gave them a 99,3% pass.

A beaming Mignon Volker, the mother of the boys, attributed the triplets’ success to their hard work as well as the commitment of their teachers, who treated them as individuals and took the time to cultivate their individual talents.

“I always tried to give unconditional love to all my children and it has always been important to us as parents to raise them up as individuals and that they knew that they were special. We tried to encourage them to explore their different talents and their teachers helped cultivate that by not viewing them as one person.”

While she said her boys have always been close and looked out for one another, she admits that they have always maintained a healthy competitiveness, but without pulling each other down.

She said all three boys are naturally sporty, but described the eldest triplet, Raymond, as the charmer and the most sociable of the three.

She said Thomas is “serious” and the go-getter with high goals to whom nothing is impossible. The youngest triplet, Sebastian, she described as very dedicated and seemingly quiet, but possessing a humorous personality.

“I have always told my boys you only go through life once. I must say I have enjoyed my children. They are lovely friends to each other and to me too. They have been wonderful children. We have had no problems with them even in their teens. Our household has been filled with laughter and fun.”
