Wall of Peace gives voice to township’s World Cup fans

VISITORS to Mpophomeni, near Howick, are assured of a colourful World Cup welcome thanks to a local businessman.

Well-known undertaker Party Zondi has turned the front wall of his home on Nelson Mandela Road, the main entrance to the township, into a World Cup showpiece. Called “The Wall of Peace”, it carries the names and flags of all 32 countries taking part in the event, plus the official Fifa flag.

Zondi explained he will be following the competition closely and each time a country is knocked out, he will remove its flag from the wall. He is confident that the South African flag will be there till the end, as “Bafana Bafana is going to make it into the finals.”

The Wall of Peace took three days to complete and Zondi did it because “I want to welcome visitors to Mpophomeni and show people that, even here in the township, we are involved in the football World Cup. I also want to show visitors that we are also human, the same as people in town. They will be safe here and we want them to visit, like the Big Kick team from Germany that came recently.”
