Warning after PMB woman raped by bogus cops

2008-06-23 00:00

Police have confirmed that a 19-year-old woman was allegedly raped on Thursday night last week, after being hijacked in Northern Park by men posing as policemen.

Police were responding to an e-mail circulating in Pietermaritzburg, alerting others to the attack and warning them to be careful.

Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said the woman was returning from a nightclub in town at around 11 pm when she was followed by a car.

She was allegedly waved down by the two men in the car in Macleroy Road.

The men, who were wearing civilian clothing, told her they were policemen. When she asked for their identification, they produced a handgun instead.

Budhram said the men forced her into the passenger seat of her car and one of them climbed into the driver’s seat. The other man returned to his car and drove away.

The woman was taken to an open piece of ground at the intersection of Maskell Road and Oribi Road, where she was allegedly raped by the man who drove her there.

He then released her and told her to get dressed. She fled to a neighbouring house to summon help. Her car was later found abandoned at the place where she was raped.

Budhram said police reiterate the warnings in the e-mail, which appeals to people to be very careful when driving around, especially when alone.

“As we know, hijacking can happen at any time, not just on dark lonely roads, but in broad daylight in the middle of town too,” reads the e-mail. “Be especially vigilant in parking lots, at robots and when you’re waiting for electric gates to open.”
