Warrant for Pienaar’s arrest: Everton player to ‘co-operate fully’ with UK police

2012-04-25 00:00

JOHANNESBURG — Bafana Bafana captain Steven Pienaar will co-operate with the authorities in England after it was revealed that a warrant for his arrest was issued on Monday.

Pienaar was caught speeding on two different occasions last October, doing 70km/h and 61km/h, both in a 48km/h zone.

Under British law he was supposed to let the authorities know who it was that was driving his vehicle at the time; apparently he did not do this.

A judge found the 30-year-old guilty of the offence in his absence and a warrant was issued for his arrest. He will post bail once arrested, after which a new court date will be set.

It is likely that the Everton player will receive his second driving ban in the UK after he was first banned for 12 months after being caught driving while under the influence of alcohol back in March 2010.

Pienaar’s agent, Rob Moore, said the incident had taken Pienaar by surprise and that he would be more than happy to co-operate with the authorities.

He said: “Regarding the court date that he was supposed to be at, it has taken Pienaar by complete surprise because he knows nothing about it … he will co-operate fully with the police in this matter.”
