Warriors beat Knights

2014-11-22 00:00

THE Warriors kept their slim hopes of playoff qualification alive with an eight-wicket victory over the Knights in their Ram Slam T20 Challenge cricket match at Buffalo Park, East London, last night.

Set 147 for victory, opener Jon-Jon Smuts led the way for the home side with an aggressive, match-winning 73 not out while captain Colin Ingram added 40 as the Warriors secured their second victory of the competition with only three balls to spare.

What promised to be a testing chase under lights turned out to be comfortable assignment for the Warriors. They lost Craig Kieswetter (11) in the sixth over but a second-wicket stand of 63-runs between Smuts and Ingram got them back on track and when matters threatened to get a little tight at the death, Smuts and Jonker opened their shoulders to steal back the advantage.

Smuts faced 56 balls striking five fours and three sixes, including one off West Indian Andre Russell that clinched the victory in the final over.

Earlier, Russell produced late fireworks as the Knights posted 146 for four wickets.
