Warriors lose, but still make T20 semi-finals

2010-09-23 00:00

THE Warriors may have lost last night, but they are still in the semi-finals of the Champions League Twenty20.

Chennai Superkings needed to win, which they did by 10 runs, and they will now face the Royal Challengers Bangalore in a titanic, all-IPL tussle at Kingsmead tomorrow.

The Superkings relied heavily on their slower bowlers last night, and it worked a treat on a St George’s wicket that showed signs of toil after being used heavily.

The guile of Muttiah Muralitharan held firm in a tense final over, and now the Superkings can plot for their Durban date with Bangalore tomorrow night.

Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni praised his slow bowlers for doing well in conditions that suited them, but warned that Kingsmead may be a different proposition.

“The guys did well, and we got some important overs from Justin Kemp and Suresh Raina. But the quicks will have to pull up the socks for Durban,” he said.

Chennai’s win was built around a fine effort by Mr Cricket, Mike Hussey. The Aussie veteran struck a fighting half-century, before he inspired in the field with two excellent catches.

Kemp followed suit with two blinders of his own, with the instinctive pluck to get rid of Ashwell Prince rather special.

Warriors skipper Davey Jacobs brushed off the defeat, saying that his side are just glad to be in the last four.

“Our goal was the semis, and we are lookin g forward to playing at Centurion because we have done well there in the past.”

In the early game, Isuru Udana grabbed the first hat trick in the history of the Champions League to lead the Wayamba Elevens to a 74-run victory over the Central Stags.

Wayamba looked as though they were a few short in making 144/6 in their 20 overs, but in the end it proved far more than enough.
