Was Moyes really that bad?

CAPE TOWN — David Moyes was hounded out of Manchester after a poor first season at Old Trafford. But was he really that bad?

Louis van Gaal was brought in to steady the (sinking) ship but after being thrashed by (minnows) Leicester City, the question remains: Was Moyes really that bad?

At this stage last season:

• Moyess’ Manchester United were in eighth position in the English Premiership

• United had played five, won two, drawn one and lost two.

• The team had scored seven goals and conceded six.

• Moyes’s  men were chasing leaders Arsenal by five points.

• Manchester United had faced Manchester City, Crystal Palace, Liverpool, Chelsea and Swansea with Marouane Fellaini the only major signing at that stage of the season.

This season:

• Manchester United “Gaal-acticos” are lying in 12th position on the log.

• United have played five, won one, drawn two and lost two.

• The Red Devils have scored nine goals and conceded eight.

• Van Gaal’s side trail Chelsea by eight points.

• The Gaal-acticos, put together by a £150 million (R2,6 billion) shopping spree, have faced Leicester, QPR, Burnley, Sunderland and Swansea.

As they say, the scoreboard — or in this case the log — never lies.
