'Water will be restored when power is stable’

2013-10-30 00:00

WARTBURG’S water woes continued yesterday as many residents faced their fourth day without water.

The uMgungundlovu District Municipality (UMDM) apologised for the situation and said that the ongoing water disruption was because the reservoir levels had dropped significantly since the pump had stopped working as a result of a power outage over the weekend. The municipality expected the water to be restored as soon as the power is stable.

UMDM spokesperson Mbali Mwandla said it was not only Wartburg that experienced water shortages and an intermittent supply over the past weeks. She said other areas affected included New Hanover, Swayimane and Bruyns Hill.

“We are aware of the challenges that demand has exceeded supply. In 2006, the average daily demand was two megalitres per day and today it is eight megalitres per day,” Mwandla said.

She added that the municipality, together with Umgeni Water, were concentrating their efforts on the operations and maintenance of the uMshwathi water system.

Mwandla apologised and urged community members to contact the call centre at 080 086 4911 in case of further problems.
