‘We could have had a revolution’

2013-12-07 00:00

MARILYN Collop cried yesterday morning when she was watching the news of Mandela’s death on TV.

“I was explaining to my kids what it meant. They don’t know about apartheid,” said this recent winner of the snapshot category in The Witness True Stories of KZN competition.

“I told them how in the old days, if a white school-leaver joined the company, I’d have to teach them their job and then they’d become my boss. Mandela saved us from that.” Collop lives in Pietermaritzburg and currently works as an area manager for a direct sales company.

“Even when he was in prison, he said he was not prepared to talk to the government while still in a jail cell. My kids started to cry when they heard that.”

Collop said she enjoyed being able to tell her two teenage daughters these stories.

“My mother was black and it was such a pleasure for her to tell us what had happened to her. We’ve lost that — telling our kids stories. Nelson Mandela meant such a lot to me. If you look at our country, we could have had a revolution.”
