'We told you so' - opposition relieved

2010-03-12 00:00

“I HATE to say it, but we told you so.”

This reaction came courtesy of DA caucus leader Bill Lambert following Dube’s announcement at a special full council meeting yesterday that Msunduzi will be placed under administration.

“This move is not unexpected. It’s just a pity that the ANC took so long to act,” Lambert continued.

His attempt to elaborate failed when council speaker Alpha Shelembe cut him off, however, DA councillor Glenn McArthur managed to say: “Municipal leadership has failed.”

When deputy mayor Mervyn Dirks said the ANC accepted the intervention and pledged their full co-operation and support, some members of the IFP heckled him in Zulu, saying: “Go tell it to Zuma.”

Shelembe banged his gavel and called for order repeatedly while ANC and IFP members insulted each other as Dube looked on in amazement.

Said ANC councillor and executive committee (Exco) member Themba Zungu in retaliation: “I would like to remind the other parties that [in Exco the ANC has] got seven [members], the IFP has one and the DA has two.”

This statement touched a nerve, resulting in another round of insults from opposition parties.

Shelembe called the floor to order and apologised to Dube for the poor conduct of the councillors.

Dube, who did not look amused, called for collective responsibility. She urged them to stop pointing fingers and rather work together for the ratepayers of the city, because, should the municipality be dissolved, everyone would be removed regardless of their political affiliation.

“I’m very disappointed,” she said.

McArthur, who tried to get another word in, but was prevented from doing so by Shelembe, gathered his documents and stormed off in a huff while the floor looked on in shock.
