We were framed for torching ANC office, now we’re vindicated, says leading activist

2011-06-16 00:00

“WE were vindicated!” That’s how disgruntled ANC activists who had been staging a sit-in protest at the ANC’s Pietermaritzburg offices reacted to news that Msunduzi Deputy Mayor and ANC treasurer in Moses Mabhida Region Alpha Shelembe, is implicated in the recent burning down of his ANC offices in Jabu Ndlovu Street.

Sbongile Mkhize a leading ANC activist who was part of the three-week sit-in, said their suspicions of corrupt regional excutive committee (REC) members being behind the arson attack is on record.

In The Witness on Monday Mkhize indicated that they suspected that the torching of the ANC offices was orchestrated by some REC leaders “who wanted to frame us and to destroy possible evidence linking them to fraud and corruption”.

“We are thankful, we are vindicated. The provincial leadership blamed us for the incident. How can we stage a sit-in for two weeks without an incident and all of a sudden burn the office when our grievances were about to be attended?” asked Mkhize.

He vowed the sit-in would continue “in order to protect every record inside these walls that the corrupt REC leaders want destroyed.”

Asked for comment yesterday, Shelembe said he does not know Mbona and has never met him. He denied involvement in the fire.
