Weather alert: Freak storm over South Coast unleashes pebble-sized hailstones

2012-04-10 00:00

A 10-MINUTE hailstorm between Umkomaas and Pennington on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast yesterday took residents by surprise.

According to locals this is the first time in over a decade such hail has fallen.

Clinton Moodley from Park Rynie said: “It was madness. The hail just came from nowhere.

“It is the first time I have seen something like it and I have lived here my entire life.”

The pebble-sized hailstones accompanied by heavy wind came down like a heavy rainfall. Within minutes the ground was covered in ice.

“Before the hail started it became bitterly cold as if it was about to snow. The last time I saw hail it was in little drips and drabs, but this was something else.” Moodley said.

The South African Weather office in Durban said that there was an alert for severe thunderstorms for the South Coast yesterday.

Forecaster Wiseman Dlamini said the storm had the particular components to turn it into a hailstorm.

He said: “The weather is expected to be better today. A partly cloudy day with some wind and slight rain is forecast for the South Coast.”

Pietermaritzburg’s weather is predicted to be partly cloudy after a foggy start, but still chilly at 21 degrees.
