Weather: fire danger this weekend

2009-07-11 00:00

IF your plans for the weekend go beyond the couch and actually involve being out and about, then expect very windy and dry conditions.

According to the Durban Weather Office, today’s wind conditions are favourable for the development and spread of runaway fires.

The western parts of KwaZulu-Natal, namely the Drakensberg and Zululand regions, will boast the strongest, westerly winds of between 40 to 60 km/h.

Tomorrow is expected to bring the first cold front of the up-coming week.

Forecaster Ricus Lombard said tomorrow’s cold front is expected to pass with a slight decrease in wind strength and cooling.

“Although there is some moisture passing over, no rain is expected and the winds are still expected to be strong westerly and south westerly.”

However, he said Monday’s second cold front is likely to pass with an increase in wind strength and even drier conditions.
