Weekend detours for Chota Motala

2012-05-10 00:00

THIS weekend will see more traffic diversions on the N3 around the Chota Motala interchange.

Construction site manager Bradley Naidoo said the diversions would be made to allow for the placing of concrete beams on the Chota Motala bridge.

On Saturday from 5 am to 7 pm the N3 southbound carriageway will be closed to traffic at Cedara. Light motor vehicles will be diverted along the R103 to Pietermaritzburg and back on to the N3 to Durban.

Heavy vehicles will be stacked and escorted by Road Traffic Inspectorate officers through the closure area on a route that will be marked out.

Also closed to traffic will be the Liberty Mall on-ramp to the N3 southbound. Traffic intending to access Northdale and Greytown from the mall will be diverted via the city to Ohrtmann or Manning roads, while traffic intending to access the N3 southbound will be diverted into Hyslop Road to the R103 and then on to the N3.

The Chota Motala Road off-ramp on the N3 northbound carriageway will be closed and motorists to Northdale and Greytown can exit at Ohrtmann Road.

The fast lane on the N3 northbound carriageway will be closed to traffic for the placing of the beams. Traffic entering and leaving Pietermaritzburg using Chota Motala will not be able to access the N3, city centre or Greytown Road.

M10 traffic (Greytown Road) to town will be detoured either at Bhambhatha Road into Ohrtmann Road or Royston into Manning Road.

Markers will be clearly placed showing which detours to use for which destination.

Traffic from the city centre to the N3 Johannesburg, Liberty Midlands Mall or Hilton will be allowed to use the on-ramp to the northbound carriageway. Motorists on these routes are warned that only one lane will be open and that delays should be expected.

For 24 hours from midnight on Saturday traffic on all roads crossing Chota Motala will be diverted while a new water pipeline is installed.

On Chota Motala from the Willowton intersection to Otto’s Bluff intersection both the inbound and outbound carriageways from Northdale and the city will be closed for 24 hours.

Willowton Road will be closed at Tucker Road T-junction and only businesses and residents in Woodlands and Willowton Road will have entry. — Witness Reporter.
