Weekend jam-packs KZN roads

2012-09-25 00:00

MAJOR routes leaving KZN were chock-full as holidaymakers made their way home after a sunny Heritage Day long weekend yesterday.

KZN Road Traffic Inspectorate spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu said high volumes were experienced at tollgates along the N3.

“We have had the highest volumes so far at Mariannhill toll plaza, with over 2 500 cars passing through there per hour, and the Mooi plaza has reported 2 100 vehicles moving through there,” said Mngomezulu.

“The Tugela plaza is also experienced volumes of over 2 000 cars per hour.

“So far we have had no accidents on the exit routes and we expect these volumes to be high well into the night.

“There is a lot of traffic leaving the province as all the holidaymakers head home.”

Mngomezulu said officers had been deployed along the main thoroughfares in anticipation of the busy day on the provinces’ roads.

ER24 spokesperson Andre Visser said no serious road accidents had been attended by paramedics.

Netcare911 spokesperson Chris Botha confirmed this, saying that no reports of motor vehicle accidents had been received.
