Western Province outplay Inland in three-day and 40-over matches

NEWLANDS is one of the most splendid settings in cricket, but it turned into a graveyard for KZN Inland when they were outplayed in both the Provincial Challenge three-day and 40-over matches at the weekend.

In yesterday’s 40-over clash, Western Province won by five wickets with just under 13 overs in hand to secure a bonus point in the process, while in the three-day match that finished on Saturday, the Capetonians wrapped up a 145-run victory.

Yesterday, Inland were never able to get on top of Province’s excellent attack, which was able to build pressure from both ends. Captain Kyle Nipper’s lads were only able to muster a modest 145 in their 40 overs. The skipper and Mario Olivier were the only two batters who managed to get any measure of the bowlers for a reasonable period of time, but no one was able to kick on.

At 34 for two, with both openers out cheaply, there was a hint of an upset, but the accomplished Alistair Gray — a thorn in Inland’s side in the three-day clash — put a stop to that thought.

In the three-dayer, Inland had a whisper of victory when WP were 133 for six in their second innings but a vital seventh-wicket partnership of 68 made all the difference.

Set 302 to win, Inland were bundled out for 145 just inside 60 overs in their second innings for the home side’s victory to be worth a massive 20,34 points to the visitors’ 7,08.

Once again it was Province’s all-round bowling attack that did the damage in supporting spinner Gray’s five-wicket haul.

It certainly was apt reward for WP, who had played attacking cricket from day one, and the fortnight’s break until their next round will give coach Doug Watson and the team time to reflect.

Next up, Inland travel to Kimberley next week for their meeting with Griqualand West from November 13.
