Westgate driver murdered in his taxi

2008-01-07 00:00

A 47-year-old Westgate taxi operator was found dead in his vehicle with a gunshot wound and several stab wounds to his body on Saturday night in what the local residents believe was a hit.

Police spokesman Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said the police first received a report of a motor vehicle collision in the Westgate area at about 7.30 pm.

The police found the Toyota Condor minibus crashed into the pillar of a home in Bhece Road, Westgate. The man had been shot in the head and stabbed several times in the arms.

Budhram said Moses Ngcobo, a taxi owner-driver, was transporting nurses from Edendale Hospital prior to the incident.

He lives in the Westgate area.

A nurse who regularly makes use of Ngcobo’s transport when she knocks off late said she believes someone attacked Ngcobo because of his route.

“There was once a problem with him fetching us because we received a lot of offers from people with vehicles to fetch nurses from hospital and Hulamin employees who knock off late,” she said.

The nurse said she was off duty on Saturday and only learnt about the murder yesterday.

Ngcobo was described by a local resident as a peaceful person. The neighbour said he did not think Ngcobo was involved in any taxi conflict. He also said that there are no taxi conflicts on the Grange, Westgate and France routes, but was not ruling out the possibility of a hit.

Attempts to get comment from the local taxi association drew a blank.

Budhram said the circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated and the motive of the murder is at this stage unknown. No arrests have been made and investigations are continuing.
