Westville Boys’ High dominate the pool

2014-02-25 00:00

WESTVILLE Boys’ High School’s swimmers proved their worth again last week when they won the Top Boys’ Schools Gala at King’s Park pool.

This was their seventh consecutive win at the event, the pressure of starting as odds on favourites doing little to diminish their prowess in the water.

Since Chad le Clos, a former Westville Boys’ High School swimmer, set the world alight at the London Olympics in 2012, local swimmers at schools in and around Durban have upped their game in dreaming of emulating him.

Eight schools battled for honours, with Glenwood seizing the initiative early in the U14 freestyle relay. This spurred Westville into action and they responded by winning the remaining four age group freestyle relays while Glenwood, Hilton and Clifton jostled for second.

Glenwood again competed in the breaststroke events, winning two of the five events — Westville taking the other three — and sending a clear message in the U15 race where the reigning champs finished well off the pace.

In the butterfly and backstroke races Westville were dominant in what has traditionally always been their strongpoint and they continued in the individual medley races, winning all but the U17 event where the ever-improving Clifton College took top spot.

Westville capped off proceedings by winning the final event of the gala, the five-age freestyle ladder relay, to hoist the trophy for the seventh consecutive year.

Clifton College, who had finished in the top four throughout the evening, looked impressive in finishing second.

The dominant swimmers were Westville’s U19 lads who won all their events under the leadership of Daniel Ronaldson, a silver medallist at the recent Five Nations International Swimming Championships in Australia.

Westville’s U16 swimmers looked to follow suit but were undone by disqualification in the backstroke event.

A concerning aspect was the number of disqualifications throughout the event, which affected the overall points standings and ruined some of the anticipated showdowns on the programme.
