Westville Boys’ High start inter-school swimming season with a bang

2015-02-10 00:00

IT was business as usual for Westville Boys’ High School’s swimmers as they swept all before them this past weekend.

The inter-school swimming season started with the annual inter-provincial short course invitational gala at WBHS, the event attracting top swimming schools from around the country, keen to upset the hosts.

Having won for the last seven years, WBHS had only one goal in mind — to keep the flag flying and knock-off win number eight.

Main rivals were Free State champions Grey College, plus Pretoria Boys’ High and St David’s, Gauteng’s strongest representatives. Closer to home, Glenwood, Clifton College, Kearsney, Hilton, DHS, Northwood and Maritzburg College were in the mix, trying to get one over their dominant rivals.

A slow start from WBHS saw Grey College take the U14 and U15 freestyle races and a brief stutter saw the hosts lose two breaststroke events, but from thereon in, it was one-way traffic.

WBHS won all the butterfly and backstroke events and most of the medley races, even a break for heavy rain and lightning not enough to break their rhythm.

Grey College won the final event of the evening, the ladder freestyle, but WBHS were already out of sight, winning overall by 49 points, a bigger margin than last year and their eighth consecutive victory in the bag.

The hosts’ B team more than held their own, finishing ahead of the A teams from College, KES, Northwood and DHS.
