Westville best St Charles

2011-01-20 00:00

TUESDAY night saw the second of the Sunfoil Night League matches between St Charles and Westville.

Despite the chanting of the St Charles boarders, victory eluded their team and Westville went home with two points after an exciting match.

St Charles’s 156 runs all out after Matt Ford elected to bat was unlikely to be enough and Westville reached the target in the 38th over for the loss of five wickets.

The match was not without drama as Ford went to a brilliant onehanded diving catch in the deep by Chestor Comins. Ford was looking confident with 23 scored off 20 balls.

A dropped catch by St Charles at a vital stage with Michael Harvey on 40 also added to the occasion and both incidents probably changed the course of the game.

It was the three Westville spinners Kyle Simmonds (2/19 in eight overs), Luke Schlemmer (3/33 in 8) and Wenzel Gordon (1/28 in 7) that caused St Charles to stutter.

After an early wicket, the only significant partnership was when Ryan Sclanders and Dean Robinson added 51 for the second wicket.

Wickets also tumbled for Westville and it was the sixth wicket partnership of an undefeated 52 — between Harvey and Simmonds — that took Westville to victory.

Earlier Brendan Hartslief had made 32. The best of the St Charles bowlers was Keegan Davids who bowled his eight overs from the start to take the first three wickets for 25.

Perhaps he should have been held back to bowl two or three overs at the end of the innings.

Score in brief:

St Charles 156 (Schlemmer 3/33)

Westville 159-5 (Hartslief 32, Harvey 45*, Simmonds 28*, Davids 3/25)

Westville won by 5 wkts

This evening sees rivals Hilton and Michaelhouse face off against each other.
