Westville man hurt in three-storey plunge; man dies in wood oven

2014-02-12 00:00

A MAN believed to be in his late 50s is in the intensive care unit at Netcare St Augustine’s Hospital after falling from the third floor of a Westville building on Monday afternoon.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said paramedics found the man lying on his back on the ground floor of the building. “He had suffered severe injuries to his leg and back and was fully immobilised on a spine board, so as not to cause any further harm.

“Apparently the patient was working on the verandah when he lost his footing, falling three storeys,” he said.

Meiring said advanced life support was applied before the man was taken to hospital.

Details of the accident are sketchy at this stage.

Hospital general manager Dr Augusta Dorning yesterday said the man was in ICU and that no media access was permitted.

“I am unable to release any details regarding this patient given that Netcare St Augustine’s Hospital has a policy in place which protects patient confidentiality,” said Dorning.

In a separate incident, a 29-year-old man burnt to death after he was mysteriously trapped inside a wood burning oven created in a shipping container near Mandeni in the Ilembe District Municipality.

Rakesh Baldeo, Industrial Park Special Security (IPSS) medical response spokesperson, said wood is burnt to make charccoal at the Mandeni Coal Factory.

He said it was unclear how the man got trapped inside the container.

When the paramedics got to the scene, the man was already dead.

Jaws of life were used to cut through the container.

“We couldn’t gain access immediately. We had to make sure that the fire was burning to its minimum before we could get in the container,” said Baldeo.
