Westville too good for Hilton on tough pitch

2013-11-05 00:00

WESTVILLE Boys’ High School hosted Hilton at the weekend. The boys returned to the cricket field after a two-week break due to exams and inclement weather.

Winning the toss, Westville captain Luke Schlemmer asked Hilton to bat on a pitch that had been difficult to prepare following consistent rain through the week.

Early wickets saw Hilton limp along to 57-4 after 20 overs, and it was thanks to Jared Edy (73*) that Hilton reached 154-6 in their 50 overs. He was involved in two partnerships of 48 and 42, which gave some respect to the final total.

One feather in Hilton’s cap was not allowing Westville to bowl them out and utilising their full 50 overs. It was the first time this season that Westville failed to knock over a side within the prescribed number of overs.

Best of the Westville bowlers were Cameron Gordon (2-27) and Simon van Staden (2-10).

Despite losing Jason Oakes early, Westville whittled away at the total with a 60-run partnership between Nick Pentz and Bruce Kerr. The job was done by Schlemmer and Alex Whitelaw, who added 65 together, to see Westville across the line by five wickets, scoring 155-5 in 45.1 overs.

Best with the bat for Westville were Kerr (38) and Whitelaw (41).

This win has given Westville the confidence they need ahead of their remaining matches against Maritzburg College and Kearsney.

Scores in brief

Hilton 154-6 (Edy 73*, Gordon 2-27, Van Staden 2-10). Westville 155-5 (Whitelaw 41, Kerr 38, Reeves 2-29, Ngidi 2-33). Westville won by five wickets.
