Wet field stumps KZN Inland and WP

2008-10-02 00:00

THERE was great disappointment for the KZN Inland and Western Province cricket teams when the first day of their three-day SA Airways Challenge Pool B match was washed out.

The PP Smit Stadium suffered a waterlogged outfield yesterday after 20 mm of rain fell in Bellville on Wednesday night.

“A decision was made to start the game on Friday, giving the groundstaff sufficient time to do the necessary preparation,” Rob Peters, communications officer of WP Cricket, told The Witness yesterday.

“As a result, the ground was not handed over to the umpires. The umpires and captains agreed that play will get underway half an hour earlier [today], with the first session commencing at 9.30 am,” Peters said.

“It is disappointing, but that’s cricket and the guys are focused on a new start now,” said Inland player/coach Doug Watson.

Watson said the starting XI had been settled on with Garry Hampson, Richard Mhlanzi and Clint Bowyer sitting out. He said the trio would come into contention for Sunday’s 45-over match.

The former Dolphins opening batsman said that despite a full day’s play having been lost, the standard 85-over first innings rule would apply and the match will still be a double-innings affair, but now played over two days instead of three.

Only if there were less than 10 hours left in the match at starting time would the match change to a first-innings alone encounter.

KZN Inland starting XI: Tafazwa Chiota, Kevershan Padayachee, Tim Drummond, Doug Watson, Andre van Vuuren, Ross McMillan (capt), Morne van Vuuren, Mbasa Gqadushe, Olly Humphries, Sashen Dorasamy, Jomo Mbili.
