What differences is Zuma talking about?

2014-04-04 00:00

IN his three-page letter to the speaker of the National Assembly Max Sisulu, Zuma refers to “stark differences” in the findings and the remedial action proposed by the Public Protector’s report and that of the inter-ministerial task team. These are the main differences:

1. Inter-ministerial task team

(published in December 2013)

• About R206 million was spent on Nkandla.

• No state money was spent to build Zuma’s personal homes.

• It is not a swimming pool, but a water reservoir for fire fighting.

• No finding against Zuma.

2. Public Protector’s report

(published in March 2014)

• R246 million spent.

• Zuma and his family gained “substantial” personal benefit from the improvements in Nkandla.

• Zuma trangressed the Executive Members Ethics Act as well as the Constitution.

• Zuma did not tell Parliament the truth about Nkandla, but did not intentionally mislead Parliament.

• Minenhle Makhanya, Zuma’s architect, had conflicts of interest and had increased the cost of the project considerably.

• It is a swimming pool, not a reservoir of water for fire fighting.

• Zuma must pay back a reasonable amount of the costs.
