When will PMB get to see ‘Slumdog’?

2009-04-15 00:00

THE earliest that Maritzburg moviegoers will be able to see the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire is at the end of April — and even that isn’t guaranteed.

It’s not the news film fans, like Kamini Pillay, have been hoping to hear. She is one of the many people frustrated by the long wait to see the film, which won eight Oscars at this year’s Academy Awards. Pillay says that when she went to see the film she discovered that none of the local cinemas were screening it.

According to Ster-Kinekor and CineCentre the reason for the delay comes down to a lack of film prints. Only two prints of Slumdog Millionaire were made available to Ster-Kinekor cinemas in KZN and only one to CineCentre.

The demand for the film has been such that it has become a fixture at Ster-Kinekor’s Gateway cinema and the second print has only just moved from Musgrave to George, which falls under the region. As for when Maritzburgers can see the film, Ster-Kinekor says it can’t give a definite date.

CineCentre too has had to keep its only copy of the film for its cinema at Suncoast in Durban, but a spokesperson for the company said they were planning to transfer the film to Pietermaritzburg towards the end of April.

Attempts to contact NuMetro were unsuccessful.
