Why I love the South Coast: Samantha Podmore

2010-11-17 00:00

BEEKMAN Group employee Samantha Podmore believes strongly in the potential of Africa to become an international powerhouse.

Being involved in a demanding job every day, Podmore holds the community close to her heart.

The Witness caught up with the public relations executive and found out how she feels about things such as local government and her job.

What keeps you on the South Coast?

The simplicity of life on the South Coast and the great potential I experience every day as I see more development of residential properties, new businesses opening doors and the community spirit of the locals as they band together to make the South Coast the place to live.

What is it about your job that makes you want to go to work every day?

I get to work with a great team of people who are not just passionate about the bottom line, but also genuinely care about the staff, the community and the bigger issues such as the environment.

What is it that you would like to see happen most in South Africa?

My biggest hope for South Africa is to see it set the standard for all other African countries to follow, with better and more consistent education for our youth and more foreign investment in the business sector in order to create more jobs and opportunities for all South Africans.

Where were you when the Siphiwe Tshabalala goal went in against Mexico on June 11?

I was with my closest and dearest friends in the Baron on Witkoppen, with a huge glass of Amarula and tears in my eyes. When the ball hit the back of the net, never had the sound of the dreaded vuvuzela sounded so good.

How do you feel about our local government?

There are good people trying to do the right thing, but there seems to be constant corruption and backhanders always going on. I don’t believe the entire burden of change should be put on the government, but the people themselves should be taking more responsibility to make positive changes in South Africa.

Where is your favourite place to go on the South Coast?

A small place near Port Edward called The Cow Shed. I have been going there for over eight years now and there is always something new and novel to see and experience. It is simple and a great day out with the family.

Which song best defines you?

The Summer of 69 by Bryan Adams. It is a song about not giving up the dream and knowing that the “best days of your life” are ongoing.

What do you look for in a partner?

Honesty and integrity. He must also have a wicked sense of humour and a forgiving heart.

What is the biggest problem facing the world today?

Obesity. They need to manufacture non-fattening chocolate.

Sharks or Bulls?

Sharks all the way … since they were still Bananas …

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?

Still living the life of Riley on the South Coast.

Who is your local hero and why?

My local hero is a girl called Jes Foord [of Hillcrest], who was brutally attacked and raped at the age of 21, and instead of just curling up and retreating, she started The Jes Foord Foundation.

How do you make the most of this beautiful area?

I explore many places of interest along the South Coast over the weekends, I am a big believer in supporting local.
