Why Westville is a sitting duck

2014-08-12 00:00

WESTVILLE’S crime trend has been blamed on the suburb’s unique geography — boxed in both by highways and opportunistic highway robbers.

The affluent area has suffered a 400% rise in house robberies between 2005 and 2013 — and they continued to rise last year.

House robberies had become commonplace — and thieves have a number of easy escape routes that make Westville a sitting duck for commuting criminals.

The suburb is virtually framed by the N2, N3 and M19 arteries, and dissected by the M13, all of which handle the majority of the city’s traffic.

Girthed by townships, robbers have an easy run out of the suburb and often evade police who respond.

According to 2012/13 police statistics, house robbery reached an all-time high of 102 incidents — up from just 23 in 2004/05 — while burglary sat at a staggering 769 reported incidents after consistent increases.

The high rate of crime in the suburb has spawned nearly 15 neighbourhood watches that operate within the borders of Westville.

The social structure in the suburb is semi-affluent to affluent and criminals can pick and choose their next target with ease.
