Wife tells court of beatings

2011-02-16 00:00

A GREYTOWN woman, Promise Ntuli (38), who alleges she was abused by her husband, yesterday pleaded guilty in the high court here to hiring a hitman to murder him on January 13 this year.

Her neighbour’s brother, Mduduzi Dumakude (31), who helped her find the hitman (Sipho Gumede) also pleaded guilty to a charge of murder before Judge Rishi Seegobin and an assessor.

The case was postponed until today after Judge Seegobin indicated that he would like to hear further evidence relating to the alleged abuse suffered by Ntuli at her husband’s hands.

“I want to know what was going on in her mind. What drove her to this point where she felt there was no other way out,” the judge told Ntuli’s legal aid attorney Ishi Khan and state advocate Candy Kander.

In her statement to the court Ntuli said her late husband, Mbukiseni, abused her on a “regular basis”.

She alleged on various occasions he assaulted her with a bushknife and tried to drown her in a river; and that he sometimes stripped her naked and assaulted her in full view of the general community.

“I told the deceased that I was going to apply for a protection order against him. Unfortunately the threat of my obtaining a protection order only goaded the deceased into subjecting me to even greater violence,” she said.

She said her husband forbade her to have any contact with her family.

About a month before he was killed he punched and kicked her, tore her dress and ripped it off her body.

He then found a purse in her bra containing R400 she had been saving for the children’s school expenses. He took the money by force in spite of her begging him not to. She then resolved to kill him.

Ntuli said she asked Dumakude to help her find a hitman, and he arranged for her to speak to Gumede. It was agreed Gumede would kill her husband in exchange for R6 000 that she would pay on receiving her husband’s life insurance.

On the day in question Gumede phoned her at about 8 pm and told her he was outside her home. He told her to leave as he was there to kill her husband. She went next door, ostensibly to visit, and while there heard gunshots coming from her home. She and neighbours found her husband with gunshot wounds to his head and abdomen.

He was taken to hospital, but died before receiving treatment.
