Wildebeest get new home in reserve near Bisley

2011-10-14 00:00

EXCITED onlookers watched 17 wildebeest being released into their new home in the Intaba Ridge Game Estate near Bisley Nature Reserve yesterday.

The animals were moved from Rocky Valley Game Lodge after they were captured by Shemungwe Game Captures using a helicopter.

Five families who live on the estate watched the release of the animals and said they were excited to see more wildlife in the sanctuary.

Said Carmen Blomeyer, “We are very happy to get the animals in our back yards, and it is a good experience to see them released,”

Said Sven Bruss, who has spent four years capturing animals, “It took us six hours to build a boma and 20 minutes to capture them.

“You must prepare your site and the weather must be on your side as we used the helicopter.

“When animals refuse to go in the boma then you will have to change all the tactics, even moving the boma to another place where they can easily get in”.

Several other animals that were due to be captured refused to go in the boma and hid under trees when they were chased by the helicopter.
