Willowton road trenches get repaired

2011-05-13 00:00

THE trenches in Willowton road, which have been giving commuters a headache for the last few months are now being repaired. Municipal spokesperson, Brian Zuma, said that the repairs — which began Wednesday — are taking place as scheduled.

The trenches spanning the road — the one used to fix a damaged water pipe — have degraded to gaping holes that scrape the undercarriage of cars and may damage tyres. Commuters are now forced to brake and swerve to try to avoid the 20 cm deep rift across the road.

The first pothole was spotted in February, and several complaints were laid with the municipality. These were followed up in March, and eventually the damaged water pipe under the pothole was fixed. However, the repair left a trench across the road, which rain and vehicles have worn away. It was around this time that the second trench appeared in the road.

Finally, the trenches were filled in with gravel and soil, and compacted, which gave motorists’ undercarriages a break for a few weeks. But the rain and heavy traffic on the road have taken their toll. Located between Natal Rubber and the Total garage, the trenches on Willowton Road see many heavy trucks and traffic which has been diverted from the roadworks at the N3 interchange.
