Winkelspruit drug bust dents heroin trade

2011-09-05 00:00

ORGANISED crime and crime intelligence units from Durban arrested a 30-year-old Winkelspruit man on Friday after he was found with 14 000 straws of heroin worth about R280 000 and 786 Mandrax tablets with a street value of R25 000.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said the man will appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court today on charges of drug dealing.

Naicker said the arrest follows another heroin bust on Wednesday when a dealer in Isipingo was arrested with 2 400 straws of heroin.

“This week’s busts have dealt a major blow to the heroin trade in Durban. These drugs were destined for areas such as KwaMashu, Umlazi, Chatsworth and Phoenix. We hope these suspects get hefty jail sentences to get them off the streets for a very long time. The latest man to be arrested has been on our investigator’s radar for months and that persistence has paid off.

“The investigators are working closely with the prosecutor to make sure that there are no loop-holes and that the case is water-tight.

“Drug dealing needs to be dealt with in the harshest manner because dealers are destroying the future of the youth and in some instances families are destroyed.

“We warn dealers that we are after them,” said Naicker.
