Winter chills: light snows on the Berg herald more icy winds

2011-07-07 00:00

VISITORS to the Drakensberg were ecstatic after they witnessed a snowfall that covered parts of Giant’s Castle and Sani Pass yesterday.

Many guests at the area’s numerous bed and breakfasts and holiday resorts took drives to enjoy the beautiful scenery that was hard to resist despite the chilly temperatures. A family of four from the Western Cape, who had been on holiday since last week Friday, said they had a fantastic time playing in the snow.

Annalize Stemmet (49) said her experience of the top of Sani Pass was priceless because of the snow and the view. Her 17-year-old son, Dawie, said: “It was my first time in the snow and we took lots of pictures. I wore lots of clothes so I wasn’t that cold.”

According to a senior forecaster at the South African Weather Service, the snow is expected to last for several days because of a cut-off low pressure system in the area.

The Province can expect the cold weather and morning frost to continue, the forecaster said.

Pietermaritzburg is looking good, with no rain anticipated, but partly cloudy and sunny over the weekend with temperatures from 19°C to 21°C.
