Winter on its way? Snow falls on Sani Top twice in a fortnight

2012-04-24 00:00

THE second snowfalls of winter were reported on the top of the Drakensberg yesterday.

The snow fell at the top of Sani Pass in the mountains of northern Lesotho in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Brian Maher of the Sani Mountain Lodge said snow fell in the morning and he suspected that more snow would fall in the evening.

Maher said: “It is a bit early in the year for snow. We actually had the first snowfall about two weeks ago.

“Although there is snow in the area, the weather is not too cold.”

Maher said he was excited about the snow, but admitted it could be a challenge when running a business.

“It does tend to become a bit more difficult to operate in such weather.”

Mduduzi Mthembu of the Durban meterological office said the cold weather would clear after tomorrow, but that another cold front could be expected in the province from Sunday evening.

The South African Weather Service forecast that below-normal minimum temperatures were likely in most parts of the country, including KwaZulu-Natal, between June, July and August.
