‘Witness’ editor joins ‘M&G’

2013-07-24 00:00

MEDIA24 News yesterday announced the resignation of The Witness editor, Angela Quintal, who will be joining the Mail & Guardian as its new editor from October 1.

“This is a great opportunity for Angela. We wish her every success with her career at the Mail & Guardian”, said André Olivier, acting general manager of the Natal Witness Group.

Previously editor of the Mercury, Quintal will return to Gauteng after four years. She steps down on August 31.

The non-executive chairman of The Witness, Stuart Craib, said yesterday: “We understand that it was an opportunity that Angela could not refuse. We wish her success in a demanding job.”

Quintal said it was a privilege to have edited The Witness and to have had the support of staff and readers, “who understand and are committed to the values of professional journalism — an increasingly rare commodity in an age where we are deluged by electronic information, much of it trite, a lot of it simply wrong or tainted by vested interests”.

“Change is always difficult, but I hope that I have laid a solid foundation to fulfil the growth plans for The Witness, while at the same time helping to ensure that it will continue to thrive in the city that gave it birth and sustained it for the past 167 years.”
