‘Witness’ reporters bag prestigious award

THE Witness has bagged another prestigious award for investigative reporting.

This time the recognition came in the Legends, Media24’s News Excellence Awards, which were handed out last night.

Taking the award for investigative journalist of the year were Jonathan Erasmus and Rowan Philp, along with former Witness reporter Mhlabunzima Memela.

Judges said the winning story, about the collapse of the Tongaat Mall, was chosen because of the thoroughness of reporting.

The Witness ran a series of articles detailing businessman Jay Singh’s controversial construction deals and the subsequent collapse of the mall in Tongaat.

“It was one of the most thorough investigative pieces entered this year, examined from every angle by the trio. The Singhs are now facing the full might of the law with several investigations pending,” said the judges.

The winners were announced at an event in Cape Town last night.

The trio were also named as joint winners in the prestigious Standard Bank Sikuvile journalism awards investigative reporting category in May for the same series of stories.
