‘Witness’ seller attacked on job

2010-09-02 00:00

A WITNESS newspaper street seller sustained serious injuries when street children attacked him as he was about to start his day job in Raisethorpe in the early hours of Tuesday.

Talking to The Witness from his Northdale Hospital bed, Kercy Moodley (60) said he was walking to meet his Witness contractor employer, Segie Naidoo, in Raisethorpe when four young men confronted him at about 2 am.

“They just attacked me to rob me of my money. I only had R15 in my pocket and they took it and ran away,” said Moodley.

He has been working for Naidoo for the past 13 years, but he has been selling the daily newspaper for 40 years.

Moodley’s right leg was broken and he sustained bruises to his face.

“They kicked and punched me until I fell,” he said.

Naidoo said Moodley’s attackers usually sleep in front of the cosmetic shop near to where he was attacked.

“When I got to the spot where I was supposed to meet him, I found police and paramedics had surrounded him.

“He just said, ‘They hit me and took away my money’. He told me that he was fine, apparently because he was not aware of the seriousness of his injuries. When he lifted up his leg, part of it just hung down,” said Naidoo.

Moodley was discharged yesterday, but he could not leave before collecting his medication from the dispensary, which was closed because of the civil servant strike.
