Woman (88) robbed at knife point

2011-08-02 00:00

A SENIOR citizen, who has asked not to be named, was robbed at knife point of an undisclosed amount of money and jewellery by an unknown man yesterday morning.

The 88-year-old Allison Homes resident said she was coming out of her room when she found the man standing in the lounge.

She had left a padlock unlocked and the intruder had gained entrance after jumping over the back fence of the establishment.

When the man saw the old lady he pushed her back into the bedroom and demanded money and other valuables.

He ripped the phone off the hook and pulled off the panic button.

“He grabbed a knife and threatened me with it. He ransacked my room and kept telling me to shut up.

“He even tried to gag my mouth but failed. He took some money and roughly pulled my ring off my finger.

“I was shocked but I remained calm and obeyed his orders,” said the senior citizen.

The home’s handyman came to inspect the fire extinguisher, and when he pressed the buzz button, the woman yelled for help.

She said the intruder ran through the back door, jumped over the electric fence and disappeared.

The woman has lived at the home for eight years and she said she had never been robbed before.

Allison Homes’ manager Bill Sutherland said he was glad that the resident was not hurt.

“I don’t want to think of what could have happened had the handyman not visited the resident.

“People should lock their padlocks all the time. We have got to take a certain level of responsibility for our safety,” he said.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan urged people, especially in old age homes, to exercise caution at all times.

She said people should lock their security gates at all times.
