Woman and cop shot dead

2014-04-30 00:00

MURCHISON Street in Ladysmith yesterday resembled a war zone as shots rang out and people took cover during the afternoon peak hour.

In the aftermath, a police officer and his cousin lay dead.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker, the officer received a complaint via his cellphone from a relative who was involved in a domestic dispute with her boyfriend.

“When he attended the incident, the suspect fatally shot a 28-year-old woman and shot the police official. The 29-year-old police official was taken to hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries,” said Naicker.

Rajesh Mahabeer of Sharaj Ambulance Services told The Witness that the woman was shot in the head while her cousin was shot in the neck and chest.

“Paramedics arrived and tried to help the woman, but it was too late for us. We managed to take the man to hospital, but he later died,” said Mahabeer.

Naicker added that they are investigating two counts of murder and two counts of robbery.

“Investigations are continuing.

“The suspect fled the scene on foot with the victim’s firearm and cellphones,” he said.
