Woman claims store owner, employee assaulted her

"IT was traumatising and humiliating,” said Elisha Govender (22), who claimed she was assaulted on Monday outside Curtain Concepts in Felix Dlamini Road (formerly Brickfield) Road, Durban, by owner Ismail Desai and an employee.

But according to Desai, they never laid a hand on Govender, who has in the meantime laid a charge of assault against the owner at the Sydenham police station.

Govender, an honours student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, said she was looking for a computer outlet in the area because she needed to have a problem with a memory stick fixed. Unable to find the computer outlet, she parked her Citi Golf outside Curtain Concepts and went inside to ask for directions.

According to Govender, she was told it was in the next building. She then left and began walking in that direction when an employee from Curtain Concepts came out and asked her to move her car. “The parking area was not designated as being only for people going to the shop,” she said. “And I said I would only be five minutes.”

Govender said the employee then pushed her towards her car and was joined by the owner, who also began assaulting her. “I told them to let me go and I began screaming. There were people watching, but no one came to help me.”

She said the assault lasted 10 minutes, after which they left her alone. Govender got into her car and drove to the UKZN Westville campus, where she parked and called her father.

A doctor later gave her a Voltaren injection and some medication “to help me relax” as well as painkillers for later use. The doctor completed a legal form, which The Witness had sight of, noting bruising on her back, as well as a tender scalp.

According to Desai, he and his employee did not touch Govender. “We wouldn’t hit a woman,” he said.

“She came into my store and asked for directions and then she left. I saw she was leaving her car and asked an employee to ask her to move it.”

He said Govender then began shouting and became hysterical and when he went out this continued. “She kicked my employee on the shin.”
