Woman dies after bakkie hits truck

A WOMAN died after the bakkie she was travelling in lost control yesterday afternoon, clearing the Armco barriers and hitting an oncoming 18- wheeler truck on the N3 soutbound, just past the Cato Ridge Oasis.

According to Chris Botha of Netcare 911, the truck lost control and overturned, plunging down an embankment and landing on top of the bakkie.

Paramedics raced down the embankment to assist the patients, but the female driver of the vehicle had died on scene of her massive injuries, Botha said.

The driver of the truck suffered only minor injuries and was taken to a hospital in Pietermaritzburg.

In another accident, 14 passengers were injured yesterday afternoon after the taxi they were travelling in crashed on the Southern Freeway.

The cause of the accident is unknown.

According to Derrick Banks of ER24, paramedics arrived on the scene to find a taxi lying on its side. All the paseengers were found seated up against the wall near the vehicle.

Two patients were treated for serious injuries while another 12 were treated for minor to moderate injuries.
