Woman fights her muggers

2009-01-14 00:00

A determined Pietermaritzburg woman ran four blocks after the muggers who robbed her of R4 000 in cash and her cellphone and managed to catch two of them and hand them over to the police.

However, her efforts were in vain as the suspect who was carrying the loot escaped.

Sindisiwe Mthembu (37) was accosted by three men, one wielding a knife, as she got out of a taxi in Langalibalele Street at lunchtime on Monday. They snatched her handbag, containing her cellphone and money, and made off with their loot.

But Mthembu refused to be a victim and set off to catch the robbers. She chased them for four blocks, heading towards the Berg Street taxi rank, where she closed in on them.

Police spokeswoman Inspector Joey Jeevan said a passer-by helped Mthembu to apprehend two of the alleged robbers. Police were called and the two men, both aged 21, were arrested.

It is believed that the third suspect escaped with Mthembu’s money and cellphone.
