Woman murdered at home

2008-02-07 00:00

Horror, anger and grief were the raw emotions exhibited by residents in the normally peaceful suburb of Wembley, who gathered at the scene where 30-year-old Michelle Murisson was found brutally stabbed to death last night while alone at home with her 14-month-old baby girl.

The Witness was told the traumatised child was found seated crying next to the bloodied body of her mother when officials from an alarm company arrived to check on the house.

It appeared that Murisson was busy preparing a meal when her attacker or attackers struck.

There was no indication of forced entry to the upmarket home, which is on a well-fenced property, and police believe it is probable that she opened the door to her assailant/s, indicating they may have been known to her.

Her BMW car, which was the only property apparently stolen, was found abandoned in Link Road a short while after the discovery of her body.

There was no indication the house had been ransacked.

Grieving neighbours, friends and relatives, including Kevin Liddel, Murisson’s boyfriend and father of their child, milled around as police went about their business, and tears flowed freely.

One irate man, who refused to give his name, declared war on criminals, saying people have had enough and the time has come to "start shooting".

The Witness learned that Murisson is a conveyancer who was employed at a prominent Pietermaritzburg law firm.

She and Liddel lived together at 28 Armstrong Drive.

Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said Murisson arrived home from work at about 4 pm yesterday. Her boyfriend and a friend, who are involved in arranging musical events, left the house at about 5.15 pm to go to the Golden Horse Casino.

At about 7 pm he reportedly received a call from his alarm company asking why he had not set the alarm at his office, which adjoins the main house.

He immediately telephoned home to ask Murisson to see to the alarm, but received no reply. He then asked the company to check on her.

When they arrived they discovered the back door open and her body lying in a pool of blood in the kitchen.

The Witness was told she sustained stab wounds to her neck, chest and right side of the body. It was initially believed her throat had been slit, but in fact a stab wound to the neck is believed to have severed a major artery.
