Woman oblivious to crash

2009-05-28 00:00

HAVE you ever seen the My-Way insurance ad, where an elderly woman runs over a pole and she doesn’t even know she is driving?

One Pietermaritzburg woman found herself in a bizarre case of life imitating art on Tuesday.

Six months pregnant Kristy Phillips (21) said she was driving from Town Bush Road heading to town when an elderly woman collided with her at the traffic circle on Chatterton Road.

Phillips said at the circle she noticed a white Toyota Tazz driving at 20 km/ hour with no hazards on coming from the opposite direction.

“It was driving straight towards my lane. The car next to me swerved to avoid it and it smashed straight into my car. It hit my car so hard that I slid out to the next lane facing oncoming traffic,” said Phillips.

Phillips said she pursued the Toyota Tazz as it did not stop after the accident. She said that when she finally got the car to stop, the female driver appeared confused and did not seem to realise she had just been in an accident.

“This 84-year-old woman just started to curse at me — I was completely shocked.”

Phillips said that even though the boot of her car was dented and the front lights of the Tazz smashed, it still took an hour for her and the traffic officer to make the elderly woman realise she had just been in an accident.

Phillips said that when they finally got through to the elderly woman, she said: “Oh that’s funny, I just had my licence renewed.”

“It says something about the traffic standards in this country if someone like that could have her licence renewed. Even though I am not happy about my car, I feel sorry for her: she seemed really confused, ” said Phillips.
