Woman stabs robber, then dies

2011-12-02 00:00

A DURBAN spaza shop owner was shot and killed during an armed robbery on Wednesday evening.

The woman didn’t die alone — she apparently managed to stab one of the gunmen to death during the robbery.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said Ntombenhle Luthuli (32) of the eNgudwini area was alone with her teenage son when Zamokuhle Xulu (21), whom they knew from the neighbourhood, came into her home with four unknown men.

Zwane said the woman’s son, seeing that the men were armed with guns, fled into nearby bushes and hid.

The boy heard a gunshot and eventually returned to the house to find his mother lying dead with a gunshot wound to her chest and clutching a knife in her hand.

Xulu lay dead with a stab wound to his shoulder.

“It is believed that Ms Luthuli fought back during the attack and managed to stab Xulu. The killings were reported to the Sundumbili police yesterday and a case of murder was opened for investigation,” said Zwane in a statement.

He said it appears that the motive for the attack was robbery.

Police appeal to anyone who may know the identities of the four suspects allegedly involved in the attack, or may have information that may help with the investigations to call the Sundumbili police at 032 454 7801. — WR.
