Woman stripped of ANC shirt

2009-02-23 00:00

Political intolerance in Pongola this weekend led to a young woman being forced to walk home in her underwear after being stripped of her ANC T-shirt on Saturday.

Simphiwe Mhlongo (23) was allegedly insulted and forced to remove her clothes while she was walking past a gathering held by the IFP-led Zululand District Municipality.

Mhlongo said she was wearing a T-shirt with a picture of ANC president Jacob Zuma’s face. She was spotted by a group of IFP members who mobbed her, leaving her clad only in her underwear.

“These people insulted me, calling me a dog, and they said that I was wearing clothes with a face of a rapist. They tore my clothes to pieces,” alleged Mhlongo.

The incident comes a week after an IFP member was arrested in Pongola for deliberately running over ANC members returning from a rally, injuring two people.

Police spokesman Superintendent Jay Naicker confirmed the incident was reported.
