Woman tells of fleeing rape scene

2009-11-26 00:00

ANOTHER woman who claims to have been a victim of an alleged three-month rape spree last year by Faizel Sayed (35), who is on trial in the high court in Pietermaritzburg, testified yesterday that she had fled the scene of the incident partially clothed.

The woman, who was 20 when the alleged rape occurred, told Acting Judge Ben van Heerden and two assessors that she was raped in a forest near Liberty Midlands Mall on June 7 last year.

Afterwards she fled from Sayed and ran until she reached the N3 near the mall. She left behind her T-shirt, slops and panties.

The young woman said a man stopped on the other side of the freeway and offered her help.

She explained to him what had happened and he then took her to a police station to report the rape. “I don’t know who he [the motorist] is,” she said.

She said she was taken to a district surgeon the same evening for a medical examination.

Sayed alleges that the woman is one of eight complainants who have made false allegations of rape against him after consenting to have sex with him.

The woman testified that she was selling food on the corner of Retief and Berg streets when a friend of hers, a herbalist, told her a “coloured male” was offering work and that she knew him because he used to buy medicine from her.

She went with Sayed and he led her to a pathway leading into the forest.

There he tripped her and then assaulted her. She ran away and he chased her. She fell again after tripping over some grass and he caught up with her.

The woman said she “felt” him press a knife to her back as she knelt on the ground. Sayed told her to sit down and take off her panties.

“I did not do that. I was crying and he told me I must keep quiet and he was going to kill me if I don’t comply,” she said.

He then raped her “for about five minutes”.

Afterwards he told her to show him her breasts.

The woman said she refused because she was afraid he might cut off her breast and use it for muthi. Sayed allegedly punched her about five times in her face as a result.

The woman said that while he was busy removing his jacket she got up and fled.

The case is continuing.
