Women’s group vows to join battle

2014-08-05 00:00

THE Women’s Legal Centre has come out guns blazing against the most recent forced sterilisation accusations.

The Centre’s Jody Fredericks said forced sterilisation was wrong as it removed a woman’s choice to conceive.

“This not only affects them physically, but filters into their social life and social standing now being unable to conceive and causes issues in their marriage.”

She said many women only discovered what had happened five years later when they tried to conceive and their gynaecologists told them they were unable to have children again.

They have confirmed they would be joining the next legal battle. “We are in the process of analysing each case …”

South African Medical Association secretary Mahlane Phalane said cases had been rumoured and isolated cases reported, but he was unaware of scientific research into the practice. “We can’t work with beliefs and speculations,” he said.
