Worker crushed at mall

2010-03-20 00:00

A SUPERMARKET worker was crushed by a delivery truck at the Northway Mall yesterday.

Jeff Wicks of Netcare911 said the man sustained severe head trauma and died before paramedics arrived.

A witness who did not want to be named said: “He was behind the delivery truck, directing it. The truck apparently got too close to the wall and when he tried to tell the driver, the truck had crushed him against the wall.”

Rob Philipson, the managing director of Spar where the man worked, described it as a freak accident.

“We have never had anything of this nature at our stores.

“According to our video footage, the man who was killed was communicating with the driver at the loading zone as the truck was backing towards the wall and he was crushed against the wall.”

Philipson said they arranged counselling for all the employees who witnessed the accident, for the man’s family and the driver who was driving the truck, and commissioned an investigation into the accident.

In an accident on the N3 Durban-bound carriageway between Cato Ridge and Hammarsdale, a construction worker was killed when he was struck by a car.

Wicks said it was alleged that the man had been working at the roadside when he stepped into the path of the car.

The driver was unable to stop in time and struck the man.

He said the Netcare911 Paramedics found the body of the worker at the roadside. He had sustained multiple traumatic injuries and died before they arrived.

In Manchester Road, a man was seriously injured when he was trapped by steel mouldings.

It is believed the man was walking through a door way when heavy steel mouldings, packed near the entrance, gave way.

Netcare911 paramedics stabilised the man at the scene before he was taken to a Pietermaritzburg hospital for further medical care.
